Is requesting TN at entry always faster than an employer petition?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

No universal comparison can promise that. Document readiness, the applicant’s circumstances, government review, travel, and any visa steps for family members all affect the practical timetable. A route that appears shorter on paper may still leave important issues unresolved.

Measure the time to authorized work

Ask when the evidence can be completed, what agency action is needed, and what admission or status step follows. An applicant outside the United States should not equate petition approval with having already been admitted to work. Keep the employer’s desired start separate from a confirmed lawful start, and agree on a contingency if more information is requested.

Do not make route decisions based on another traveller’s reported processing experience. Sequencing failures usually trace back to an unowned handoff rather than to any agency. Identify the person who will confirm that the last outstanding item is finished, and make that confirmation an explicit event rather than an assumption drawn from silence.

Hypothetical example: a civil engineer’s employer schedules an on-site orientation on the strength of an internal note saying the file is ready, while the professional-body letter the file depends on has been requested but not received. Nobody lied; nobody checked. Agree a single readiness statement, given by a named person, that the employer treats as the trigger for booking travel.

Government review timelines are outside everyone’s control, but the readiness of your own file is not.
