When should franchise training and opening be scheduled?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Coordinate training, site approval, buildout and immigration processing as distinct milestones. A franchisor’s preferred opening date does not guarantee that the investor will have the required status or that public permissions will be ready.

Check dependencies before committing to attendance

Clarify the proposed training activity and obtain advice on the appropriate travel authorization rather than assuming any business visit permits work. Record which opening steps the franchisor or authorized personnel can complete beforehand. Keep application timing separate from contractual launch targets, and update the operating forecast if continuing royalties or premises expenses begin before the expected revenue date.

Franchise systems run to their own calendar, and the sequence they prefer is not always the sequence that suits the applicant. Establish what the franchisor requires and when: training attendance and where it takes place, site approval, build-out scheduling, and any opening window the agreement imposes. Then identify which of those the operator can attend or perform given the status they currently hold, because training in the United States and operating a business there are different activities with different implications.

Ask what happens to the agreement, the site and any payments made if the operator cannot open within the period contemplated. Where the franchisor requires a commitment to a date, negotiate explicitly for the contingency rather than relying on goodwill, and take advice before signing anything that ties a payment to a schedule outside the applicant's control.
