Do not assume it does. Dependents must have the appropriate extension or admission process for their circumstances, and each person’s status documentation should be checked separately. Eligible children must remain unmarried and under 21.
Protect the household timeline
Review I-94 expiries and any pending filings before relying on continued stay or work. An eligible spouse’s employment authorisation is incident to valid L-2 status with suitable evidence; a pending application alone should not be treated as an unrestricted work document. L-2 children cannot work through that status.
Coordinate travel and employment questions with the principal’s extension review. Understand what the dependent classification does not reach. L-2 status follows the principal’s qualifying status; it does not create an independent right to remain if that status ends, it does not permit children to work at any age, and it does not extend beyond the dependent limits of marriage and age 21.
Hypothetical example: a heritage restoration contracting business extends a specialist and the spouse assumes her existing employment simply continues, having read that L-2 spouses may work. Eligible spouses are generally work authorised incident to valid L-2 status, so the permission depends on the status remaining valid and properly documented rather than on the earlier employer relationship. Check each dependant’s own admission record and expiry, and treat a gap in the principal’s status as a question about the whole household.
