Can I seek TN if I hope to immigrate to the United States later?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

A future hope is not the same as the purpose of the immediate entry, but TN still requires a temporary stay. State Department guidance allows a distinction for future intent unrelated to the immediate trip. Applying that distinction to concrete plans requires individual legal review.

Disclose what has actually happened

Tell counsel whether there is merely an idea, an employer commitment, or an application or petition already underway. Include planned travel and the purpose of the proposed assignment. Do not conceal material facts or adopt a scripted claim that contradicts your real plans.

The reviewer should assess the present request under TN requirements and explain which future actions need separate advice; this overview cannot determine the outcome of an intent assessment. Nothing about a distant ambition has to be settled before a TN request is made, yet the order in which steps happen changes what must be disclosed afterwards. A petition filed by an employer, a family petition submitted by a relative, or a consular interview attended all become part of the history a later admission request may surface.

Hypothetical example: a Biologist mentions a possible future sponsorship at an initial consultation, and a relative files a petition shortly afterwards; the second fact changes the briefing, and counsel needs it before the next entry rather than after it. Raise each step as it happens, in the order it happens, so the adviser is never working from a picture that has already moved on.
