Plan family commitments around the authorization currently available while seeking advice about longer-term options. A hoped-for future status does not extend anyone’s current stay. Eligible TD dependents have individual records to track, and TD itself does not authorize employment.
Review transitions for every person
List schooling, spouse employment needs, travel, and each family member’s status dates. Ask counsel how any proposed future process would affect those specific plans rather than assuming everyone changes status together. Consider what the household would do if the longer-term option did not materialize.
The practical plan should remain workable during the temporary assignment without depending on a guaranteed green card, uninterrupted employment, or automatic dependent eligibility. School enrolment, a lease and a spouse’s resignation each carry a point of no return, and those points rarely fall in the same order as the immigration steps. Work out which household commitment becomes irreversible first, then establish what has to be settled before it.
TD status follows the principal’s admission, so nothing can be arranged for a dependant until the principal’s route and timing are clear. Hypothetical example: the spouse of a Scientific Technician resigns a Canadian post on the strength of a verbal start date, before the principal’s profession has been matched to the appendix; the household loses its income while the credential question is still open. Let the irreversible decisions come last.
