THE SHORT ANSWER

A temporary professional assignment and longer-term personal ambitions can raise questions that deserve individual advice. Organize the actual employment proposal and relevant immigration history honestly. A preparation file should help counsel assess the circumstances, rather than manufacture a convenient story or conceal plans that may matter. Put the file together in the order the decisions were actually made. A briefing that runs chronologically lets the adviser see which facts existed at each point, which is precisely the question that arises when a temporary purpose is examined. Grouping the same records by type hides that sequence and forces the adviser to reconstruct it from signature blocks. Chronology also makes it obvious which document is still missing from the middle of the story.

01

Separate confirmed arrangements from possibilities

Record the proposed work duration and employer terms as they stand. List longer-term possibilities as unresolved matters for discussion, not as contractual facts. This distinction keeps the evidence accurate while avoiding statements that imply a future outcome has already been secured.

02

Bring relevant history to the adviser

Provide prior immigration filings, decisions and any other records requested for the assessment. Explain uncertainty directly where your recollection is incomplete. Choosing what to omit because it seems inconvenient can prevent the adviser from identifying an issue that affects the proposed TN strategy.

03

Use advice to guide the sequence

Ask how the actual circumstances affect the proposed temporary admission and any later steps. Keep that discussion separate from promotional promises about permanent residence. TN is a temporary classification, and an organized briefing cannot establish that every longer-term plan is compatible with a particular application.

04

Credentials sit at the head of the chain

Credentials sit at the head of the chain because they decide whether the rest of the file is worth assembling. The professional appendix names each occupation together with the credential that supports it, and no amount of employer enthusiasm substitutes for the listed requirement. Have the degree, licence or experience checked against the profession first, then let the employer describe duties that match what was verified. Hypothetical example: a Geneticist holds a research doctorate while the employer letter is written around laboratory management; the duties as drafted read closer to supervision than to the listed profession, so the letter is redrafted before travel rather than defended at the counter. Repairing the head of the chain costs far less than defending its tail.

05

Refresh the briefing at each decision point

Briefings prepared for one admission are snapshots, and the sequence keeps moving after the picture is taken. Treat every later step — an extension, a change of employer, a trip abroad, a petition filed by anyone in the household — as a point at which the file is re-read rather than reused. Self-employment stays outside the classification throughout, so a drift toward independent contracting partway through an assignment is a change worth raising at once. Note in the file which facts were current when the adviser last saw it. That single line tells the next reader whether they are looking at the present situation or at the situation as it stood some time ago.
