Should dependent documents be checked while the main file is being reconstructed?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Yes. Missing marriage, birth or identity records can create a separate preparation issue, so assess dependent evidence alongside the principal’s file. Eligible spouses and unmarried children under 21 may seek L-2, but must establish their own qualifying relationship.

Keep the two records distinct

Use appropriate civil-document procedures and translations where necessary rather than substituting a workplace statement for relationship evidence. Eligible spouses in valid L-2 status may work incident to status with suitable documentation; children cannot. Do not commit the household to travel while assuming unresolved principal or dependent evidence gaps will be ignored.

Dependent evidence has its own owners, and the principal’s employer is not among them. Civil registrars issue relationship records, the family requests and checks them, and counsel decides whether the set supports each person’s application. An employer letter cannot establish a marriage or a parent-child relationship, however senior the signatory.

Hypothetical example: A rural equipment leasing company assembles a thorough file for a specialist while nobody in the household has confirmed that a child’s birth registration exists in a form an authority will accept, and that omission surfaces only when travel is being booked. An eligible spouse in valid L-2 status may work incident to that status once the documentation the family relies on is in hand; children in L-2 cannot work at any age. Give each dependent record a named person responsible for obtaining and checking it.
