Read the general life across the border overview
An approval involving the principal does not eliminate each family member’s status and procedural questions. L-2 dependants, for example, are not included on the L-1 petition. Identify what has actually been approved, who it concerns and what the spouse or children still need before treating the household as ready. Order the household’s work rather than running it in parallel with the principal’s. Some dependent steps cannot begin until the principal’s position is established, while others, including civil records, translations and passport renewals, should begin at once because they depend on institutions nobody in the family controls. Knowing which is which prevents the common outcome where everything starts together and the slowest item is discovered last.
Read the scope of the milestone
Identify the person and request covered by the approval or update received. Avoid turning an employer’s statement that the case is approved into an assumption about every family member. The principal’s progress is relevant context, but the household still needs a clear account of the individual procedures and records outstanding.
Map the remaining family actions
List the proposed dependent category for each person and identify the applicable visa, admission or change and extension questions. The exact steps depend on the circumstances and nationality. Have the sequence reviewed rather than assume that relationship documents submitted somewhere in the principal process necessarily complete the dependant’s own required action.
Separate readiness from work permission
A family member’s travel preparation, status and employment evidence need distinct checks. TD does not permit work, while qualifying E-2 and L-2 spouses have different employment rules from children. Before confirming plans, establish which individual questions have actually been resolved rather than relying on the principal approval as a universal answer.
What has to happen before what
Obtain the applicable civil records early: a marriage certificate for a spouse, birth certificates for children, and any name-change record needed to connect identities. Those records sit with registrars who work to their own schedules. Check passport validity next; an expired passport or pending renewal may delay the visa or travel step that requires it. The dependent application itself usually waits on the principal’s position being established, and travel arrangements wait on that in turn. Hypothetical example: A seed processing manager’s family leaves a child’s passport renewal until the principal’s case concludes, and the renewal becomes the item everyone waits on while a start date passes. Draw the household sequence once, mark which steps carry external dependencies, and begin those the day the plan is agreed.
What the principal’s milestone does not start
An approval concerning the principal does not begin a dependant’s process automatically; L-2 dependants, for instance, are not included on the L-1 petition, and each family member’s own step still has to be taken. Work permission has its own sequence again: an eligible spouse’s authorisation follows valid status and whatever documentation the family relies on, while TD dependants may study but are not permitted to work at all, and children in L-2 cannot work regardless of the principal’s position. School enrolment, tenancy and employment offers should be sequenced behind each family member’s own confirmed position rather than behind the principal’s. Where eligibility depends on age or marital status, examine the timeline early, because that clock runs independently of every other step.
