Which documents should we gather first?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Begin with identity and family records, a source-of-funds chronology, bank transfers and the enterprise documents. The useful starting package explains both the investor’s money and what the U.S. business will do with it.

Create two connected evidence files

Use one file for ownership, lawful earnings or asset proceeds, taxes and transfers. Use another for formation documents, investment agreements, the business plan and job support. Link the final transfer in the first file to the enterprise’s receipt in the second.

Keep dated versions and identify missing records before signing deadlines make obtaining them difficult. Gathering has an order of its own, and the sequence is set by who controls each record. Hypothetical example: An investor selling a stake in an audit-support outsourcing business needs the sale agreement, the completion statement, the tax filings for the relevant years and the bank credit that follows from them.

Those come from four custodians working at four speeds, so the request that depends on an external institution goes out first while internal documents are compiled in parallel. Build the chronology forward from the earliest lawful earning rather than backward from the transfer, because the gaps appear where a step is missing at the start. Add the enterprise file only once the money file is coherent; linking a documented transfer to the enterprise’s receipt is straightforward, while linking a receipt to an unexplained transfer is not.
