Can a two-income household qualify through one TN job?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

One qualifying TN job may support the principal worker’s application, but it does not authorize both adults to work. Assess the worker’s profession, credentials, nationality, employer arrangement, and temporary purpose before deciding whether the household can rely on that offer.

Separate eligibility from affordability

For a hypothetical couple with two existing Canadian salaries, the useful first question is which earnings would continue under legally reviewed arrangements after moving. The answer may change the relocation decision even when the principal job is a strong TN fit. Ask counsel to identify any independent route for the spouse; do not describe the spouse as a second worker on the principal’s TN application.

Budget pressure cannot substitute for employment authorization. Revisit the household position whenever either side of it moves, because both sides move. Hypothetical example: a zoologist accepts a research post and the spouse expects to keep a Canadian contract remotely; six months later the contract ends and the spouse begins looking for U.S.

work, which is a different question from the one anyone assessed. The principal offer supports one worker and authorizes nobody else. Ask counsel at the outset to identify any independent route for the spouse and to say what would have to change for it to become available.

Never describe the spouse as a second worker on the principal application. Record the assumptions so they can be checked again when circumstances shift.
