Can I qualify for TN if my degree has a different title from the proposed profession?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

A different title is not automatically decisive, but the actual education and work must support the category being claimed. State Department guidance recognizes that substantial subject overlap can matter. That is not permission to use any degree for any profession or to disregard a specific credential requirement.

Look for the connection that can be demonstrated

Describe the professional knowledge each major responsibility uses, then identify evidence of that knowledge in the completed education. Distinguish a genuine overlap from skills learned solely through unrelated employment. If the explanation depends on assuming that all technical or business degrees are interchangeable, it needs further review.

The applicant must also meet the other TN conditions, including eligible citizenship and a temporary, prearranged professional assignment. A degree comparison is only one part of that assessment. Approach it as a question about the field of study rather than the wording on the parchment.

Degree titles change with institutional fashion, while the courses completed, the thesis or capstone undertaken and the areas examined tend to describe the underlying knowledge more reliably. Obtain the full transcript and the calendar description of the programme, and mark the components that correspond to the duties the employer has described. Where the connection is genuine but indirect, it can generally be explained; where it does not exist, no amount of presentation will create it, and that is a finding worth reaching early.

Note that the credential requirement is set for each listed profession individually and some categories accept alternatives to a degree, so establish which profession is in issue before concluding that a degree title is fatal.
