Should my family plan a move while my TN education fit is unresolved?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Treat the education question as an unresolved dependency in the household plan. Family TD eligibility rests on a qualifying TN principal; buying tickets or enrolling in a relocation benefit does not resolve the principal’s case. TD also does not itself authorize a spouse to work.

Define the household decision trigger

Choose what evidence or review result you need before committing to housing, school changes or employment resignations. Keep family identity and relationship documents ready while the professional issue is assessed, because those preparations may be useful without fixing a move date. If a spouse has an independent work route, obtain advice on that route separately rather than counting it as a consequence of TN.

The family can compare alternatives once the education question has a reasoned answer, not merely a polished explanation. Set a decision trigger the household can actually recognize, and agree it while everyone is calm. A useful trigger is a specific event rather than a date: the employer confirming the profession in writing, the transcript arriving, or counsel giving a view on the connection between the two.

Until that event occurs, keep the family's arrangements reversible. Hypothetical example: a partner considering resigning from a hotel manager position should know whether the trigger has been met or merely expected, because the two feel similar in conversation and differ entirely in consequence. Remember that TD status carries no permission to work, so a spouse's own employment plans require a separate assessment.

Where children are involved, identify the last point at which a school place can be declined without cost, and treat that as a deadline the immigration question must clear.
