Could a TN job change affect my dependents’ plans?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

It can affect the family’s planning because dependent status is connected to the principal’s status, but the required steps depend on the specific change and each person’s records. Have counsel review the principal and dependent timelines together rather than assuming the family documents update automatically.

Check individual dates and travel

Gather every relevant I-94 and note planned trips, passport validity, and any pending dependent filings. Ask whether the proposed route changes what relatives need for travel or continued stay. TD status itself does not permit employment, so a job transition should not be financed by assuming a dependent can immediately work.

If the principal employment ends, seek prompt individual advice rather than applying a generic deadline to the whole household. Dependant status carries a boundary that surprises households repeatedly: TD permits presence and study but does not authorise employment. No incidental allowance exists for paid work, for running a business from the residence, or for accepting contract income from a Canadian payer while living in the United States.

A spouse who intends to work needs an independent basis in their own right, assessed on its own facts and on its own schedule. Hypothetical example: a social worker admitted in TN status plans a relocation on the assumption that the accompanying spouse will resume clinical practice within months, and the household budget collapses once that assumption is examined. Establish what each person may lawfully do before the moving date is fixed.
