What should accompanying family members check at admission?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Each family member needs the appropriate travel documents and evidence for the status being requested. Prepare relationship records and confirm nationality-specific visa requirements before travel. The principal TN packet alone does not describe every dependent’s situation or complete their admission process.

Check every person’s record afterward

After admission, retrieve the relevant I-94 records and review each person’s identity, classification, and authorized period. Do not assume that because the principal’s record appears correct, every dependent’s record is also correct. TD status itself does not authorize employment.

If a family member receives an unexpected classification or date, obtain prompt guidance before relying on assumptions about permitted activities, school plans, or the length of the family’s stay. Household facts shift as well, and a dependant’s position can move while the principal’s stays still. A child turning 21, a marriage or separation, a further citizenship acquired during preparation, or a spouse accepting Canadian employment all affect what the family should request and when.

Hypothetical example: a geologist’s field assignment is extended while the family is already in the United States, and the dependants’ authorised periods, fixed by the earlier admission, do not stretch alongside it. Raise a development of that kind with counsel when it happens rather than at the next crossing, since TD status permits study but never employment, and a plan built on the older household facts may no longer be lawful.
