Label commercial metrics accurately
Paying customers, trial users and expressions of interest show different things. Explain which measures support revenue and what costs are necessary to deliver it. If intellectual property is contributed, document ownership, transfer and a supportable value instead of relying solely on a fundraising valuation.
Keep operational proof connected to the investment and control records so the business model can be assessed as a whole. The characteristic failure is a metric doing work it cannot support. Trial users, waiting-list signups and expressions of interest are each meaningful to a founder and none of them is revenue, yet they frequently appear in one table beside paying customers under a single heading.
The earliest signal is a chart with no definitions beneath it. Label each measure for what it is, and show separately what customers have paid and what it costs to deliver. Where intellectual property is contributed, document ownership, the transfer and a supportable basis of value rather than relying on a fundraising valuation.
Keep the operational records connected to the investment and control evidence so the model can be assessed as a whole.
