How long does L-1B preparation and processing take?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Timing depends on evidence readiness, the filing route, nationality-specific procedures and the case’s circumstances. Preparation, petition adjudication and any visa or admission steps are distinct; no fixed schedule applies to every applicant.

Plan from eligibility and status dates

Confirm the qualifying employment period and actual U.S. duties before choosing the filing date. Review current processing information and any optional premium service for the applicable filing without treating it as guaranteed approval.

Track the approved and admitted periods after arrival. L-1B generally has a five-year overall stay limit, subject to individual rules and exceptions. Timetables survive change only if someone re-reads them when a fact moves.

Hypothetical example: A wealth-reporting platform postpones a U.S. launch, and the transfer planned around it loses its firm date. Delay is not neutral here: the qualifying year abroad must fall within the relevant three-year period preceding the filing or admission, so a long enough postponement can move the employee outside the qualifying window, and periods already spent in the United States can affect how the overall limit is counted.

Rather than simply pushing every milestone back, ask counsel to re-test the qualifying employment against the new date. Where a delay is likely, decide early whether to file on the original schedule or to rebuild the chronology around when the transfer will genuinely happen.
