Read the general eligibility basics overview
Obtaining Canadian citizenship changes a nationality fact, but it does not automatically grant U.S. work permission. Revisit the proposed route using the citizenship now established, the actual duties and the correct procedure. Earlier planning based on Canadian PR should be updated rather than simply relabelled as an approved TN case. The first review should issue a short citizenship-and-route memo: what status changed, how it is evidenced, what remains unchanged, and which U.S. category still fits the actual opportunity. Citizenship can open a TN analysis but does not answer the profession, employer, temporary-purpose, credential, or procedure questions. The employer should wait for that review before promising a U.S. start date.
Update the factual summary
Record the citizenship change and identify the evidence available to establish it in the relevant process. Keep earlier residence and travel information accurate rather than rewriting the history. The aim is to show what changed and when so the next reviewer can distinguish a new nationality fact from the unchanged parts of the proposal. Hypothetical example: a hydrographer becomes a Canadian citizen after accepting an offer that has since shifted from mapping waterways to managing the employer’s sales territory. A passport establishes the new nationality fact, but the amended offer and duty schedule settle the more important question: whether the proposed work still matches the professional basis being considered. The decision is whether to preserve the technical role, reassess the category, or delay the move.
Reassess the real opportunity
For TN, citizenship is only one requirement. Confirm that the actual profession, position and qualifications support the category being considered. If the offer has also changed while citizenship was pending, review the current duties rather than relying on the older description. A nationality change does not make every U.S. job suitable for TN. Keep a simple before-and-after fact sheet instead of overwriting prior residence history. The citizenship certificate or passport proves nationality; the offer, job description, and qualification records prove the opportunity being assessed. This prevents an avoidable error: treating a new passport as if it changed an employer, position, or professional credential that did not change with it.
Confirm the next procedure
Ask what documentation and steps apply now, including any family members whose nationalities have not changed. Do not assume the whole household acquires the same procedure through one person’s citizenship. Review the timing of the U.S. plan on its own facts before promising an employer that work can begin immediately after the Canadian change. Resolve the principal’s route before trying to solve the household’s logistics. Then list each family member’s nationality, present status, and intended travel separately. The record that settles a dependent question may be a marriage or birth document, not the principal’s citizenship evidence. A family plan goes wrong when it assumes one person’s new nationality automatically supplies everyone else’s procedure.
