Those documents serve different functions and should not be reduced to one household expiry date. Review each family member’s actual status and admission evidence alongside the visa and principal records. A visa label or principal approval should not substitute for checking the individual document relevant to the question being asked. Decide which individual event must happen first: principal admission, a spouse’s job decision, a child’s school plan, or a separate application. Canadian PR and citizenship are different, and a PR card does not establish TN nationality. Track each person’s activity because dependent status does not give every family member work permission.
Sort records by person and purpose
Create separate private folders or entries for the principal, spouse and each child. Label visas, admission records, approvals and any employment documents distinctly. This prevents an apparently longer date on one record from being used to answer a different question, such as the spouse’s current work evidence or a child’s period of stay. Give each person a row for citizenship, passport expiry, current status, admission record, and intended activity. This exposes missing civil records and avoids relying on the principal’s approval.
Ask which record answers the question
A travel-document question differs from a individual current-status or employment-verification question. For qualifying E and L spouses, USCIS identifies particular I-94 classifications as employment-authorization evidence. Have the actual combination of documents reviewed rather than selecting whichever date seems most convenient or assuming the principal’s records define every family member’s position. Ask for the document answering the precise question. Qualifying E and L spouses may have status-based work authorization, while TD dependants may study but cannot work.
Resolve discrepancies promptly
If names, classifications or dates appear inconsistent, identify the precise difference and seek the appropriate review or correction process. Do not alter records yourself or assume that a family member’s document cures the discrepancy. Record the advice received and update the household planning calendar only after the relevant issue is understood. Hypothetical example: An ice-machine repair contractor’s family assumes the transfer approval lets the spouse accept seasonal work. Review the spouse’s own status evidence before a start date is promised.
