What should my family consider when a small employer offers a new TN role?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Consider how the household would manage uncertainty in a role that is still being established. Ask about benefits eligibility, coverage start dates and relocation support directly. A spouse and eligible children may pursue TD, but TD itself does not permit employment or guarantee employer benefits.

Discuss practical support before committing to the move

A small organization may handle onboarding informally, so obtain written answers about the benefits you are counting on. That is a planning observation, not a claim about all small employers. Determine how you would respond if the role changes before authorization or the start date moves.

Keep a family budget that does not assume a second income under TD. Each person’s immigration procedure and relationship documentation also need attention even if the employer is concentrating only on the principal’s job offer. Discuss practical support with the employer explicitly, because a small business often has genuine goodwill and no established practice, and goodwill that has never been specified tends to evaporate under pressure.

Establish what the company will actually do: whether it contributes to relocation, when any benefits begin and who they cover, whether it will assist with anything the family needs on arrival, and who at the company owns that. Get it in writing even if it is modest, since a written commitment from a small employer is worth more than a generous verbal one. Hypothetical example: a household in which one partner works as a vocational counsellor should establish whether that partner could realistically continue any employment, remembering that TD status carries no permission to work and a second income requires its own basis assessed separately.
