How long should I allow for TN planning from the first conversation?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Allow for evidence preparation and the route-specific process, not just the moment a filing is submitted or admission is requested. The timeline depends on unresolved qualifications, employer cooperation, document availability, visa requirements, and government action. There is no universal completion date.

Use milestones rather than a single promise

Set dates for receiving the duty statement, checking credentials, deciding the route, and reviewing the final packet. Then discuss travel and the lawful work start in light of the applicable authorization. If the employer needs an early answer, distinguish an initial fit assessment from a confirmed ability to begin work.

Build a fallback for delays before making commitments that assume admission or approval will occur on schedule. Schedules break at the slowest external dependency, which is almost never the applicant. Hypothetical example: A disaster relief insurance claims adjuster is asked to begin within days of a deployment decision, and the one item nobody can produce quickly is proof of the required disaster-relief claims-adjustment training, together with either a qualifying degree or three years of documented claims-adjustment experience.

Registrars, former employers and translators work to their own calendars, and none of them treats an employer’s start date as binding. Identify the single record that depends on somebody outside the household, begin that request first, and let the remaining milestones move around it. A start date agreed before that record exists is not a plan; it is a guess.
