How should spouse and child plans enter the initial TN assessment?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Discuss dependents at the beginning, particularly if the household expects a spouse to work. Eligible spouses and unmarried children under 21 may have a TD route, but TD status itself does not authorize employment. Nationality and travel circumstances can create separate visa steps.

Define the household’s actual needs

Record who plans to move, whether they will travel together, each person’s documents, and any current U.S. status. If a spouse needs employment, request an independent assessment of a work-authorizing route rather than treating it as part of the principal TN.

Schooling, benefit coverage, and later arrival arrangements also deserve planning. The family’s practical timetable may differ from the employer’s preferred start even when the principal case appears viable. Households usually learn the work restriction too late to plan around it.

Hypothetical example: A librarian preparing a move budgets on the assumption that a spouse’s income continues, then discovers that TD status permits study but not employment. Once a lease is signed or a second job resigned, the remedy is an independent assessment of a work-authorizing route for that spouse, which proceeds on its own requirements and its own schedule. A quieter failure follows from staggered arrivals: family members admitted on different dates can hold different periods of stay, and nobody notices until one document expires ahead of the others.

Check every person’s admission record individually after entry rather than assuming the household shares the principal’s dates.
