Must the family travel to every worksite with the L-1B employee?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

L-2 eligibility does not require a spouse or child to accompany every business trip. Household planning should nevertheless reflect each person’s valid status, admission records and the principal’s continuing qualifying employment.

Separate work travel from residence

Eligible spouses may work incident to valid L-2 status with appropriate documentation, while unmarried children under 21 may qualify for L-2 without work rights. If the family establishes a U.S. home while the principal travels frequently, keep immigration records current and review unusual residence patterns individually.

A work itinerary is not a dependent admission record or a guarantee of continued status. Decide where the household lives and record it once. The principal’s itinerary is a work document; it does not establish where dependents reside, and mixing the two produces addresses that contradict each other across forms, leases and school records.

Assign responsibility for keeping each person’s records current. L-2 spouses are generally work authorized incident to status and will need their own documentation to show an employer. Unmarried children under 21 may qualify for L-2 and cannot work.

Hypothetical example: a robotics specialist works across three customer sites while the family settles near the U.S. entity’s office. Keep the two immigration files apart in your own records, so a change to one is not assumed to update the other.
