What should we prepare if family members move on different dates?

THE SHORT ANSWER

Accompanying family members do not always travel with the principal, but later travel still needs individual preparation. TD and E-2 guidance recognize eligible family members following to join. Confirm the principal’s current circumstances, the family relationship and each traveller’s procedure rather than treating an earlier household plan as sufficient for every arrival.

01

Record the actual sequence

List who would enter first and the proposed dates for the others. Include the practical reason for staggered travel, such as work or school commitments. This outline helps identify which information may need updating between trips, rather than assume that documents prepared for one family arrival remain a complete account months later.

02

Check the principal’s current position

Before a later family trip, confirm whether the principal’s work, status or plans have changed. Dependent eligibility is connected to the relevant principal framework. The review should use the current facts, not simply an old approval notice or the memory that the principal entered successfully at the start of the assignment.

03

Prepare each traveller individually

Review the relationship evidence and nationality-dependent visa or admission questions for each person travelling later. Do not assume a spouse and child have identical work or document rules. After arrival, check their own records and dates; a staggered move should not become a reason to overlook an individual status or documentation issue.

04

Write the sequence down with dates and dependencies

Families travelling separately usually hold the plan in conversation, and the gaps only become visible when it is written out. Set it down as a schedule: who travels when, on what basis, what each person needs in place beforehand, and which arrangements depend on somebody else having already arrived. Mark the dependencies explicitly — a lease that requires the principal's employment documentation, a school place that requires an address, a shipment that requires someone present to receive it. The exercise regularly reveals that an intended order is impossible, and it is far cheaper to discover that on paper than after a flight has been booked and a notice period served.

05

Confirm each traveller's own position before they move

A family arriving in stages generates several separate immigration events rather than one, and each person's position needs to be right at the moment they travel. Check each individually and close to the date: what status they will seek, what documents they must carry, whether anything has expired, and whether the principal's position has changed since the earlier arrangements were made. Do not assume that a person travelling later automatically inherits the basis on which someone travelled earlier. Where a significant gap is planned, confirm what the later traveller may do in the meantime and whether any step must be completed before departure. Keep a copy of each person's admission record once they arrive, and check that it says what it should.
